Winterizing Your RV: How to Drain the Water

February 16, 2022  |  Topring

Drain residual water from the plumbing lines using a water blowout adapter. A simple and safe way to evacuate water to winterize your RV.

Prepare your recreational vehicles (RV), camper van, or fifth wheel for wintertime. As the season changes from summer to fall, and the temperatures start to fall below freezing it is important to protect your investment and make sure that your RV is in top shape for next year.  Here are two important reasons you should drain residual water from the plumbing lines.

Prevent Freezing Damage: Water expands when it freezes, and this expansion can cause significant damage to your RV's plumbing system, including pipes, faucets, water heater, and sewage system. The cost of repairing or replacing these components can be substantial.

Protect the Water System: Even a small amount of residual water left in the pipes can freeze and cause cracks, leaks, or burst pipes. Winterizing ensures that there is no water left in the system to freeze. This preventative measure ensures your RV's plumbing remains intact, saving you time, money, and stress.

Use compressed air to drain the water from the pipes of your RV:

  1. Close the hot water tank and set the bypass valves
  2. Set the air pressure to max 45 PSI
  3. Connect the hose to the inlet of the water system
  4. Open the valve
  5. Open each water outlet

Here is a short instructional video that demonstrates how to drain water from an RV’s plumbing.

You will need:

  • 1 compressor with a hose and quick coupler ¼ industrial profile (which will connect with the ¼ industrial plug included with the water blowout adapter
  • 1 water blowout adapter kit with or without a preset pressure regulator and with or without a pressure gauge

The essential tool for winterizing RVs: the water blowout adapter kit

vr-maintenance_blogue_2022-02_image01Key features and benefits:

  • Robust and high-efficiency design for a longer lifespan
  • Quick and easy use
  • Environmentally friendly alternative: no need for antifreeze solutions
  • The ball valve is airtight in both directions, for an optimal connection
  • Robust, lightweight, and ultra-flexible hose to access tight spaces
  • Hose compliant with RoHS standards and phthalates free

To drain the water from the pipes of your RV, you will need a water blowout adapter kit. Select the required model according to the connection with your garden hose.

vr-maintenance_blogue_2022-02_image02👉 Protect water lines and components from excessive pressure and prevent possible component failures by installing a pressure regulator or selecting a model that comes with a preset pressure regulator.
